Next stepsFidelity is one of the two or three best brokers for the wheel strategy — solid Active Trader Pro platform, reasonable $0.65/contract commissions, easy options level 2 approval, excellent customer service. If you're deciding where to open your wheel account, Fidelity is arguably the safest default.
This guide walks through the complete Fidelity setup for wheel trading: opening the account, getting approved for options, using the platform, and executing your first full wheel cycle.
1. Why Fidelity works well for the wheel
- $0.65/contract commissions. Standard rate for major brokers.
- No assignment fee. Some brokers charge; Fidelity doesn't.
- Active Trader Pro platform (free). Solid option chain with all Greek columns.
- Full IRA support. Options level 2 approval works in Traditional and Roth IRAs.
- Excellent customer service. Real humans available for options-approval questions.
- Multi-leg orders supported. Rolls are one-click.
2. Opening the account
Basic steps at fidelity.com:
- Click "Open an Account" from the Fidelity homepage.
- Choose the account type: Individual Brokerage (taxable), Roth IRA, Traditional IRA, or SEP IRA. For wheel purposes, Roth IRA is ideal for tax-free growth.
- Complete the online application — takes about 15 minutes. Standard info: name, SSN, employment, financial background.
- Fund the account via wire, ACH transfer, or check. Wheel-viable capital: $10,000 minimum for one contract on a modestly-priced quality name.
- Wait 1-3 business days for account approval and funds to clear.
3. Getting options level 2 approval
Options approval is a separate application AFTER account opening:
- Log in to Fidelity and navigate to Accounts → your account → Features → Options
- Click "Apply for options trading"
- Complete the application:
- Investment objective: select "Income" or "Income and Growth" (not "Speculation")
- Risk tolerance: "Moderate" (not "Conservative" — that sometimes triggers L2 denial)
- Options experience: honestly report — even paper trading counts
- Requested tier: "Tier 2" (Fidelity's equivalent of options level 2 — includes cash-secured puts and covered calls)
Approval typically arrives within 1-3 business days. See our full options approval guide for detailed application tips.
4. Active Trader Pro — the wheeler's platform
Fidelity offers two platforms: fidelity.com (web) and Active Trader Pro (desktop download). For wheel trading, Active Trader Pro is much better:
- Streaming option chain with real-time Greeks (delta, IV, theta)
- Multi-leg orders (roll trades in one click)
- Customizable layout with position monitoring
- Free with any Fidelity account (download from your account settings)
The web platform works too but is slower and has less options-specific analytics. Active Trader Pro is worth the download for anyone doing more than occasional trades.
5. Placing your first cash-secured put
Example: sell a cash-secured put on KO (Coca-Cola) at $60 strike, 35 DTE.
- Search KO in Active Trader Pro
- Click "Trade Options" tab
- Select the expiration date ~35 days out
- Click on the put side of the option chain
- Find the strike near 0.20 delta (Fidelity shows delta in the chain)
- Click on the bid/ask for that strike
- Order type: Sell to Open
- Quantity: 1 (one contract = 100 shares of assignment obligation)
- Price: midpoint or slightly better (adjust downward to get a fill)
- Verify collateral requirement shown at the bottom (should be strike × 100 for cash-secured)
- Preview and submit
Fidelity's order preview shows the cash requirement clearly. If it exceeds your available cash, the order won't place — the "cash-secured" constraint is enforced by the broker.
6. Managing positions after placement
Standard wheel management:
- Set a "close at 50% profit" alert using Fidelity's alert system
- Monitor delta drift — position tab shows current delta on each position
- Close early when target hit: right-click position → "Buy to Close"
- Rolling: right-click → "Roll" opens a multi-leg dialog that lets you close current position and open a new one as a single trade for a net credit
7. What happens at assignment
If your put finishes ITM at expiration:
- Overnight Friday-to-Saturday: Fidelity processes the assignment
- Monday morning: 100 shares appear in your account at the strike price
- Cash equal to strike × 100 is debited (the collateral is applied)
- No commission on assignment; no assignment fee
You'll see an "Assignment" notification in your account activity. The shares are yours to hold, sell, or run covered calls against.
8. Selling the covered call after assignment
To sell a covered call on assigned shares:
- Verify you have 100+ shares of the underlying
- Navigate to the option chain for that ticker
- Select an expiration ~30-45 days out
- Click on the call side at your desired strike (0.20-0.30 delta, at or above your cost basis)
- Order type: Sell to Open
- Verify "Covered" checkbox is checked (Fidelity auto-detects since you own the shares)
- Preview and submit
9. Next steps
- Open your Fidelity account if not already
- Apply for options level 2 (Tier 2 at Fidelity)
- Download Active Trader Pro for the best wheel experience
- Start with one small position on a quality name
- Journal every trade using our journaling guide

Is Fidelity a good broker for the wheel strategy?
Yes — one of the best defaults. $0.65/contract commissions, no assignment fee, solid Active Trader Pro platform, easy Tier 2 (options level 2) approval, works in Traditional and Roth IRAs. Reliable customer service if anything goes wrong.
How long does Fidelity options approval take?
1-3 business days for typical Tier 2 (options level 2) applications. Faster if you have prior options experience listed. Sometimes same-day at low volumes. See our full options approval guide for application-tip details.
Do I need Active Trader Pro or can I use the Fidelity website?
You can use fidelity.com but Active Trader Pro is much better for wheel trading. Streaming Greeks, better option chain interface, multi-leg orders. Free download with any Fidelity account. Worth downloading for anyone doing more than occasional trades.
How do I place my first cash-secured put at Fidelity?
In Active Trader Pro: search ticker → Trade Options → select expiration ~35 DTE → click put strike near 0.20 delta → Sell to Open → quantity 1 → verify cash requirement → preview and submit. Fidelity enforces the "cash-secured" constraint automatically — order won't place if you lack collateral.
Does Fidelity charge fees for assignment?
No — Fidelity does not charge assignment fees. The $0.65/contract commission is only on open and close trades. Assignment itself is free.
Can I run the wheel in a Fidelity Roth IRA?
Yes — Fidelity approves options Tier 2 (cash-secured puts + covered calls) in Roth IRAs routinely. Application is identical to a taxable account. Premium and dividends become tax-free forever inside the Roth. See our Roth IRA wheel guide.
How do I roll a losing put at Fidelity?
In Active Trader Pro: right-click the open position → "Roll" opens a multi-leg dialog. Select new strike and expiration for the new put. Fidelity shows the net credit or debit; only submit if net credit (never roll for a debit). Executes as a single trade.
What are the biggest Fidelity-specific wheel tips?
Three: (1) use Active Trader Pro, not the website; (2) set alerts for 50% profit targets via Fidelity's alert system; (3) apply for Tier 2 specifically — don't over-request Tier 3+ which slows approval without unlocking anything wheel-relevant.
