Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is the professional-grade broker most preferred by high-volume active traders. It offers the lowest commissions in retail, the best margin rates, direct market access to global exchanges, and the industry's deepest set of order types. The tradeoff: steeper learning curve. If you're trading 100+ wheel positions per year at 3+ contracts each, or you need international market access, IBKR pays for itself many times over.

This guide walks through the complete IBKR setup: account opening, options approval, the platforms, and executing your first wheel cycle on Trader Workstation (TWS).

1. Why Interactive Brokers for the wheel

2. Opening the account

  1. Go to interactivebrokers.com and click "Open Account"
  2. Choose account type: Individual, Joint, IRA (Traditional/Roth/SEP), Trust
  3. Complete the online application — about 20-30 minutes (more thorough than other brokers)
  4. Fund via ACH, wire, ACAT transfer, or check. No minimum balance for account opening
  5. Complete W9 + Regulatory questions
  6. Wait 1-3 business days for account approval

IBKR's application is more thorough than Fidelity/Schwab/Tastytrade because it opens more capabilities. Take your time on the trading experience questions — they directly determine your options approval level.

3. Options approval — the 3-5 day process

IBKR options approval combines with the account approval process:

  1. During account setup, select trading permissions: Options + Bonds + Mutual Funds
  2. Request "Level 2" options: covered calls, cash-secured puts, long calls, long puts
  3. Complete the options experience questionnaire: honest responses; 2+ years experience helps
  4. Approval typically arrives with account approval (1-3 days)
  5. If denied at first level, apply for Level 1 first and upgrade after 3 months of activity

4. IBKR Lite vs IBKR Pro — which to pick

IBKR offers two service tiers:

TierCommissionsOrder routingBest for
IBKR Lite$0 stocks, $0.65/contract optionsPayment-for-order-flowCasual/lower-volume wheelers
IBKR Pro$0.005/share stocks, $0.65/contract standard or $0.15-0.65 tieredDirect market access, SmartRoutingActive wheelers (recommended)

For wheel traders, IBKR Pro is almost always the right choice. Direct market access provides better fills; tiered options pricing reduces to $0.15/contract for high-volume traders; margin rates are lower on Pro accounts.

5. TWS vs Client Portal vs IBKR Mobile

IBKR offers three platforms:

TWS is a steep learning curve but unmatched in capability. Client Portal is a solid fallback if TWS feels overwhelming initially.

6. Setting up TWS for wheeling

One-time TWS setup for the wheel:

  1. Download TWS from interactivebrokers.com
  2. Log in with IBKR credentials
  3. Add wheel candidate watchlist: File → New Window → Watchlist
  4. Enable IV Rank column: right-click column header → Configure → add "Implied Volatility" and "IV Percentile" columns
  5. Set up option chain view: right-click any ticker → Option Trader → configure to show Delta, IV, Bid, Ask
  6. Learn the OrderPreset system: File → Global Configuration → Order Presets → create wheel-specific presets (LMT orders, GTC, 1 contract default)

7. Placing your first cash-secured put

Example: sell a cash-secured put on KO at $60 strike, 35 DTE:

  1. Type "KO" in the search bar or watchlist
  2. Right-click KO → Trading Tools → Option Trader
  3. Option chain appears — select expiration ~35 days out
  4. Locate put strike near 0.20 delta
  5. Right-click the bid → Sell → Limit
  6. Order ticket appears — verify: Sell, Limit at mid-price, Quantity 1, Duration Day (or GTC)
  7. Click "Preview Order" to see margin/cash requirement
  8. Click "Transmit" to place

8. Commission structure (the killer feature)

IBKR's Tiered options pricing (Pro accounts) is the most competitive in retail:

Monthly volume (contracts)Per contract costComparison to $0.65 flat
<10,000$0.65Same as Fidelity/Schwab
10,001-50,000$0.5023% cheaper
50,001-100,000$0.2562% cheaper
>100,000$0.1577% cheaper

For a wheeler doing 50-100 trades/year at 1-3 contracts, this is essentially $65-130/year — same as competitors. For a professional-grade wheeler running 500-1000+ contracts/month across many positions, the savings become meaningful.

9. Next steps

  1. Open your IBKR account if not already
  2. Apply for Options Level 2 and IBKR Pro
  3. Download TWS and invest 2-4 hours learning the interface
  4. Practice with paper trading (IBKR has a paper account) for 1-2 weeks
  5. Start with one position on a quality name

Frequently asked questions

Is Interactive Brokers (IBKR) a good broker for the wheel strategy?

Yes — arguably the best for professional-grade wheel traders. Lowest commissions in retail (tiered pricing reaches $0.15/contract), best margin rates, direct market access, deepest order types, portfolio margin at $100k+. Tradeoff: steeper learning curve than Fidelity or Tastytrade. Best for high-volume active wheelers or those needing international market access.

How long does IBKR options approval take?

1-3 business days, combined with account approval. IBKR's application is more thorough than other brokers, but options approval typically arrives concurrently with account approval. If denied, reapply for lower level and upgrade after 3 months of activity.

What is TWS and why does it matter for wheeling?

TWS (Trader Workstation) is IBKR's professional-grade desktop platform. Offers deepest order types, Risk Navigator for portfolio-level analysis, Options Strategy Lab, custom scripting via API. Steep learning curve (2-4 hours to become productive) but unmatched in capability once mastered. For wheelers doing 5+ positions actively, worth the learning investment.

IBKR Lite vs IBKR Pro — which for the wheel?

IBKR Pro almost always for wheel traders. Direct market access provides better fills than IBKR Lite's payment-for-order-flow routing. Tiered options pricing reduces per-contract cost at scale. Margin rates lower on Pro. IBKR Lite fine for casual traders but Pro is the standard for active wheelers.

How much do IBKR commissions cost for wheel trading?

$0.65/contract standard (same as Fidelity/Schwab). Tiered Pro pricing reduces at scale: $0.50 at 10k+ contracts/month, $0.25 at 50k+, $0.15 at 100k+. For typical retail wheeler (50-100 trades/year, 1-3 contracts each), similar to competitors. For high-volume professional-grade wheelers, meaningfully cheaper.

Does IBKR support Roth IRAs for the wheel?

Yes — IBKR supports Traditional, Roth, SEP IRAs. Options Level 2 approval works the same as taxable accounts. TWS and all platform features work with IRAs. Portfolio Margin is NOT available in IRAs (SEC restriction), only in taxable accounts.

What is IBKR Portfolio Margin and does it help wheelers?

Portfolio Margin (available at $100k+ taxable accounts) reduces buying power requirements based on portfolio-level risk analysis rather than position-by-position rules. For wheelers running 5+ positions, this can free up 30-50% additional buying power. Powerful but requires proven risk management — not for beginners.

How does IBKR compare to Fidelity, Schwab, and Tastytrade?

IBKR: professional-grade, best commissions at scale, steepest learning curve. Schwab (thinkorswim): best options analysis platform. Fidelity: best all-around simplicity + research. Tastytrade: best options-first workflow. Pick based on priorities — deep professional tools + volume (IBKR), analysis (Schwab), simple all-around (Fidelity), options-first (Tastytrade).
